Residential Landscapes
We are most active in assisting clients and their architects by designing appropriate settings for their residence. For new construction, working collaboratively as members of the design team we most often become involved in siting the residence and other major structures so that the architectural and landscape designs are each a continuation of the other. The same philosophy applies in residential and landscape renovations as the landscape always should serve as a true extension and reflection of the residence and the family that resides there.
Commercial & Civic Landscapes
We are often called upon to assist in developing major exterior elements that are considered integral to the project’s success. Such factors most often apply in upscale retail centers, residential developments, hotels and inns, as well as non-commercial projects such as churches, educational centers, airports, parks and the like.
Ornamental Water & Fire Features
The relatively mild winters of our principal service areas allow enjoyment of the landscape in all seasons. Well-placed water features ranging from a small fountain to brooks, streams and architectural water arrangements help to reduce the heat in an outdoor living space while adding pleasant sounds and visual delight. Additions of fire elements, often as part of the same installation, allow the landscape to be accessible and enjoyable in the cooler months as well.
Swimming Pools and Spas
A properly designed and sited swimming pool is of critical importance to the success of residential design. Issues of intended use, visibility, accessibility, the interactions of shade-sun-maintenance, material selection for surrounding terraces and related structures, and the like all require a collaborative design process ensured to maximize the client’s satisfaction with their landscape development.
Walkways, Paths & Walls
Connecting the various elements of the landscape requires the design of appropriate walkways and paths while screening for privacy and concealment of unsightly viewscapes often suggests properly sited walls of materials which are complementary to the residence and other major structures. Well placed lighting ensures safety and security of the environment while also allowing these elements to serve as principle design features of the evening landscape.
Landscape/Garden Structures
Often a landscape or garden structure is the most effective way to extend the residence into the landscape in a way that meets the client’s needs. These include arbors, pergolas and other destination structures for relaxing and entertaining, functional spaces such as cabanas and garden storage rooms, or simply “follies” that provide an actual destination for the wanderer or a visual element that simply frames or serves as a focal point of the viewscape.
Rockwork and Drainage
One of the most frequently requested elements of a landscape in our principal service areas is the use of native rock. It is amendable to many important landscape features such as walls, walkways, drainage courses, patios and borders, and related structures. Generally low maintenance and easily blended with all styles of architecture and landscape design, rock elements are particularly effective in ensuring that the landscape appears natural and timeless no matter how recent its installation.
